Templates Require Tinkering
If you have the time to tinker with spreadsheets, this argument is pointless. But, if you are focused on making money, and spend your time on billable or important projects, consider the following. Getting the information you need from a timesheet template will require a lot of time. Yes, you'll get the basic weekly totals, but how about Joe's time for XYZ client? Or Mary and Joe's time for the month of July. It won't happen unless you tinker with the template. Does that sound free? Try this instead.

Templates don't watch out for you
Excel templates don't have rules to watch for excessive time spent on tasks. They don't cut employees off when they've entered 500% too may hours. The don't notify you of overruns. Only smart software does that.

You'll do all the Work
Who do you think will do all the work of entering weekly hours into the timesheet template? You will. Your employees will email their hours to you, and you'll type them in. Sound fun? Sound free?
