Why Standard Time is good for your career.
How could tracking time possibly be good for my career? Good question! Follow this line of reasoning and see if you don't agree.
If you work on clearly defined projects, as most people in business do, tracking your time can give you an immediate short-term edge, and a clear long-term advantage in your career. Here's how. As you track time, and study the kinds of work you do, you are learning valuable things about your work habits, your company, and project execution.
It is surprising how few people truly understand the anatomy of a project and how to properly execute one. People with proven track records for proper project execution have a career advantage over those who do not - regardless of their actual position in the company. These techniques cannot be learned in a week, month, or even a year. They take time to develop. Once you begin to realize that tracking and studying your time is a contributor to these life-skills you'll wonder how you ever did without it.
Take an hour or so to observe your fellow co-workers. Do they care about proper project execution? About what makes a project succeed or fail? Probably not. They care about doing a good job and getting paid for it. But why not care about both, doing a good job and knowing how to make the project succeed? That's where the career advantage becomes real. As your co-workers ignore these issues, you are learning more about them. As they ignore aspects of their career, you are building yours. It starts by monitoring the actual tasks you perform and how they contribute to the project as a whole. Studying the details. That's where Standard Time really helps.
Even if your company does not use Standard Time, you should. If fact your company may never use it until you show them the clear advantage you get in terms of knowledge and efficiency. Don't expect your boss to understand until you show him or her. People are not born knowing this stuff!
