Comparison Checklist:  When shopping for timesheet or time tracking product, make sure to ask these questions...

Do they have both Windows and Web Timesheet interfaces?

There are lot of timesheet software products on the market.  But not all offer both Windows and Web interfaces.  Some only offer Windows.  Some only Web.  And others are Linux or Mac only.  Standard Time has both Windows and Web interfaces, and you get them both in your licenses.  There's no extra cost for that.  Whatever you do, don't settle for a web-only solution (without equal Windows functionality).

Do they charge extra for core components?

Read the fine print on those timesheet products.  Many are just that: timesheets only.  Unless you pay extra for the expense tracking, time off tracking, project management, task management, and all the other core components that belong in a good timesheet system.  The cost of buying all those extras will break the budget.

Are they a shareware or consulting company?

Many smaller companies offer time tracking products on the web, but aren't really in that business.  They do it to make a little extra money, but their "day job" is consulting.  In other words, their product is not really supported.  It's just thrown out there to get a little more income.

Do they answer the phone?  Email?

Is the timesheet deep or shallow?

Deep products are better.  As long as they are easy to use.  Why?  Because companies need to know that their product choices will grow with them.  And sometimes, you really need a feature that you forgot to ask for.  A deep product will likely have all the bells and whistles that you'll come to rely on.

Do they support a wide range of time tracking methods?

Not everybody works the same way.  Even in your own office.  Some of your people track time one way, and some another.  A good timesheet product will offer lots of ways to track time.  Your comparison should take this under consideration.  You should be able to enter hours into projects and tasks.  Start and stop a timer.  Automatically log out when punching in and out.  And see employee status for running timers.  Who's in?  Who's out?  When did they last punch in/out?

Do your people like it?

This is the bottom line.  If your people won't use it, then it's not an option.  Go ahead and deploy Standard Time as a pilot.  You'll find that people like it, and are willing to enter their time as they go.  That means you'll have the project tracking time you need, without all the employee complaints.
