Create a Standard Time database in MS SQL Server

Before following these steps, you might consider an alternate approach.  You can create an empty database within SQL Server, and have Standard Time create all the tables and columns in it.  This approach means that you will start with an empty database and you'll need to add all your projects, categories, tasks, etc.  (The method below copies all this information from an MS Access database to SQL.)  You should choose which approach is best for you.  If you choose to create an empty database in SQL, you can skip these steps.

  1. Launch SQL Server Enterprise Manager.

  2. Right-click in the Databases tree icon
  3. Choose All Tasks, Import Data...  The DTS Import/Export Wizard will open.  Click Next until you see the screen below.

  4. Choose the Microsoft Access Data Source, and browse for the Standard Time database you are currently using.  This is usually found in c:\program files\standard time.  Click Next.

  5. Choose to create a new SQL database.  Enter the name "Standard Time".  Click Next.

  6. Choose to copy tables from the source database (the MDB database).  Click Next.

  7. Click Select All to copy all tables from the source database.
  8. Click Next twice, then Finish to begin the migration.  All the data will be transferred from the MDB file to the new SQL Server database.  The transfer process is shown below.

  9. Migrate is complete!  Click on the Database folder icon and press F5 to refresh the view and see the new Standard Time database.

  10. IMPORTANT.  You must now open each table in the database, and change any 'smalldatetime' columns to 'datetime'.  You must use the 'datetime' data type for all date related fields.  Right-click on each table within the Standard Time database, and choose Design Table.  When the design view opens, look for any 'smalldatetime' fields, and change them to 'datetime'.  This must be done for all tables.

Microsoft SQL Server now has a new database for Standard Time.  Click the Back button to learn how to create an ODBC data source to point to the new SQL Server database.
